When you try to please everyone, you lose your distinct style.

Starting a business requires setting clear boundaries

Starting a business requires setting clear boundaries, especially when it comes to choosing who to collaborate with. Here are the four types of bosses you should avoid partnering with:

  1. The Braggart: This type of boss starts conversations by boasting about their accomplishments or capabilities. This can be a red flag as it may indicate a focus on self-promotion rather than mutual benefit and collaboration.
  2. The Flamboyant Speaker: A boss who uses overly elaborate or pretentious language during conversations might be more focused on appearing impressive rather than clear and effective communication. This can lead to misunderstandings and inefficiencies in business operations.
  3. The Portfolio Prowler: Those who immediately ask to see all your previous work or achievements might not trust your capabilities or could be shopping around more than they are looking to form a solid partnership. It’s important to share your portfolio, but it should not be the only basis for the partnership.
  4. The Non-Payer: If a potential business partner wants to “test” your services or products without any upfront payment or formal agreement, this shows a lack of commitment and financial integrity. It’s risky to engage with someone who isn’t willing to invest in your services from the start. Consider luxury items like Rolls-Royce cars or Gulfstream jets—would they offer you a test drive without a prepayment?

Steve Jobs’s concept of the “reality distortion field” isn’t about proving how confident you are, but rather it emphasizes that to be extremely successful, you need to be more knowledgeable than others. Expertise is the key to changing the course of battle.
